ModMed vs NextGen Ambient Assist

Last VerifiedAugust 4, 2026
Verdict

Two ambulatory record systems that added a scribe, competing for the same independent specialty practice, and the difference is what each can prove about the model inside it. ModMed makes the more specific claim, that Scribe was trained on de identified data sampled from more than 750 million encounters and built alongside on staff specialty physicians, and it holds the stronger external credential, having certified its record system to the decision support intervention criterion with Scribe named as central to it. NextGen makes the vaguer claim, an accuracy figure of over 90 percent with no definition, denominator or reference standard, but handles the output more carefully, placing the note pending review with codes and orders as suggestions rather than pre filled. Neither publishes a price for the module, an attestation of its own, or any position on accent and dialect performance. Specialty fit decides this, not the AI.

Select ModMed if
  • Specialty depth is the reason this platform exists: eleven specialty specific record systems with named protocol libraries, against a general ambulatory platform carrying specialty template sets.
  • A checkable training provenance claim, that the scribe was trained on de identified clinical data sampled from more than 750 million patient encounters and developed with on staff specialty physicians, where the alternative publishes an undefined accuracy percentage instead.
  • An externally audited AI credential. The record system is certified to the decision support intervention criterion with the scribe named as the technology central to that certification, which is a real regime rather than a principles page.
Select NextGen Ambient Assist if
  • The transcript position is stated: conversations become temporary transcripts used only to generate the structured note, and documentation flows into the Enterprise record rather than persisting on the device.
  • A conservative structured output gate, with codes, medications and orders offered as suggestions and the note placed in the chart explicitly pending provider review.
  • Fit for the independent and specialty practice base NextGen already serves, with 26 specialty template sets in the parent platform and capture through an application clinicians already carry.

Disclosure

NextGen's headline accuracy figure of over 90 percent is published without a definition, reference standard, denominator or specialty breakdown, so it cannot be compared with anything. ModMed publishes no accuracy figure at all, and no SOC 2, HITRUST or ISO 27001 attestation or trust centre was located in its own materials, nor any HIPAA statement or business associate terms. NextGen's trust page describes the certifications of its cloud host rather than of the product.

Neither vendor publishes a bias, accent or dialect performance statement, and neither publishes a rate card for the AI module, so both prices sit inside a record system contract negotiated by practice size.
